For the author study supplemental activity, I completed a book box. I covered a cereal box with construction paper and glued various pictures that represented Flint, Michigan on it. I chose to decorate The box with pictures of Flint, Michigan because this city is where Christopher Paul Curtis was born, as well as the setting for many of his books. For this author study I read The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963, Bud, Not Buddy, and Mr. Chickee's Funny Money. All of these books take place in Flint, Michigan. Inside of the box I placed a brown bomber 1963, a recorder, and a magnifying glass. The brown bomber 1963 represents the car that the Watsons drive from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama. Daddy fixed up this car for the Watsons with a record player to enjoy on their journey south. The recorder represents the book Bud, Not Buddy. In the book, Bud is searching for his father. He finds flyers for the Dusky Devastators of the Depression and believes that Herman E. Callaway is his father. When he meets the band he is welcomed by the members and Miss. Thomas. Steady Eddy gives Bud a recorder for him to learn how to play music with. This gift means a lot to Bud and makes him feel like he is a part of the band. The last item in the box is the magnifying glass. This item represents the Future Flint Detectives of Mr. Chickee's Messy Mission. The detectives go out in search of Russell's dog, Rodney. They get sucked into a mural and enter a land known as "Theirside". While on "Theirside", Russell meets his favorite author and helps him destroy a dangerous character.
